RETINOL AND MELANIN-RICH SKIN:

4% retinol is a clinical concentration. For melanin-rich skin, the introduction phase matters. Begin every other evening for the first two to three weeks. Allow your skin to adjust before building to nightly use. Some dryness, peeling, or mild sensitivity in the first two to three weeks is the adjustment period not a sign to stop. Stopping during the adjustment period means stopping before the results begin. Stay consistent through the adjustment.

Do not use on the same evening as your Clear Pro Pads or any other acid exfoliant. Retinol and acids on the same evening create the irritation that worsens post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on melanin-rich skin.

Retinol evenings. Acid evenings. Alternate. Never together.

THE CLEANSER: Every protocol begins with clean skin. OROYO Azelaic Soft Cleanser — $60 is formulated specifically for melanin-rich skin and provides anti-inflammatory cleansing that prepares the barrier for both the Brilliance Serum in the morning and the retinol in the evening. OROYO MINERAL SUNSCREEN SPF 40: The most important step in this entire ritual — and it is not included because it belongs in your morning ritual permanently, not just within this protocol. 4% retinol makes melanin-rich skin more photosensitive. UV exposure the morning after retinol use without SPF creates the very post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation this ritual is working to prevent and fade.

SPF after retinol is not optional. It is the step that makes retinol safe for melanin-rich skin.

Both formulated with iron oxides protecting against HEV visible light — a documented driver of melasma that standard SPF does not address. Without morning SPF — this ritual is working against itself.

How to Use

MORNING — Brilliance Serum $109 · Every morning. Your daily defense against new pigmentation — and your clinical brightening treatment from the AM side of the protocol. 20% L-Ascorbic Acid with ferulic acid and Vitamin E. The most bioavailable form ofVitamin C in dermatology at the concentration that actually interrupts tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin overproduction — on melanin-rich skin specifically.

Here is why the morning placement is clinical strategy and not habit: UV exposure triggers melanocyte activity every unprotected day. The Brilliance Serum applies antioxidant protection before that exposure begins — neutralizing the free radical damage that accelerates pigmentation and aging simultaneously.

Ferulic acid stabilizes the 20% L-Ascorbic Acid — preventing the rapid oxidation that makes most Vitamin C serums ineffective before the bottle is finished. Vitamin E amplifies the antioxidant protection of both Vitamin C and ferulic acid — nourishing the barrier while brightening the skin.

Applied every morning on slightly damp skin after cleansing. Pressed gently with fingertips to absorb fully. Follow with Peptide Lift Moisturizer then Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40.

EVENING — Night Repair Serum 4% Retinol with Vitamins A, C & E $109 · Your cell renewal and resurfacing protocol from the PM side.

4% retinol — Vitamin A in its most active form accelerates cell turnover at a rate the skin cannot achieve on its own after the mid-twenties. As cell turnover slows with age, melanin-rich skin accumulates pigmentation, dullness, and textural changes at the surface faster than it can shed them. Retinol resets that rate.

At 4% — the Night Repair Serum delivers clinical-strength renewal. Fine lines soften. Skin texture refines. The accumulated surface pigmentation that makes tone uneven turns over more rapidly — revealing the clearer, more luminous skin developing beneath.

  • Dullness and loss of luminosity — the accumulated surface effect of slowed cell turnover and daily UV and environmental exposure on melanin-rich skin over time
  • Uneven skin tone and early hyperpigmentation — the Brilliance Serum and Night Repair Serum address both the trigger prevention and the accumulated pigmentation from both the AM and PM sides
  • Early to moderate signs of aging — fine lines, early loss of firmness, textural changes — the retinol and peptide complex address structural aging while the Vitamin C addresses the pigmentation that compounds with it
  • Post-acne dark marks that have persisted despite brightening serums — the 4% retinol accelerates the cell turnover that moves pigmentation through the skin layers more rapidly
  • Women ready to introduce retinol into their melanin-rich skin ritual for the first time — with the clinical guidance and the formulation safety that makes it appropriate for Fitzpatrick IV, V, and VI skin types
  • Adding a PM renewal layer on top of an existing morning foundation — this ritual is designed to layer on top of your Preservation Ritual as a complete evening renewal protocol
